It explains that you should write naturally so that related words and not just words with the same meaning should appear. So if you were writing about gardening services you would use words like grass, plants, ground, weeds, etc. Not just garden, gardens, landscaping, landscaping, etc.

It then goes on to explain about Link Analysis, the supplemental index and human reviewers. Worth a read if you want to ensure your site stays top on Google.

We all want our website to have a high ranking. But it can be confusing how to do this. You have probably heard of the terms SEO and SEM but what is the difference?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the optimising of your website for natural (also called organic) listings in search engines. The ones that are not paid for. This optimisation is called on-site adjustments but the disadvantage is that it can take time to get a good listing.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is a broad term for the use of both on-site as well as off-site adjustments. Off-site adjustments can be paid inclusion and paid placement as well as article marketing.

SEO is only a small part of SEM. SEM is considered more expensive because you have to pay for adverts or clicks but gives you immediacy. But depending on your goal a mix of both on-site and off-site adjustments can work well. Although SEO must be your first step in website promotion.

If you own a small business website then you can improve traffic by creating relevant content videos. Sites like Youtube allow anyone to upload their video for mass consumption. So why not use it to promote your business.

I am not talking about high production videos. I am talking about simple webcam videos. It’s easier than ever to create a video then upload them to online communities.

But what content? Well whatever service your small business does. If you provide gardening services why not have a few short videos on describing the best way to look after your decking. Or if you are a dance instructor, have some videos that give dance steps and advice.

It’s easy to provide handy hints and tips to your audience. Your business will look more open and friendly compared to your faceless competitors. Why not turn it into a monthly video update or a hint and tips section.

Once you start you will find yourself coming up with great ideas. You will reach a broader audience by having content on a site like Youtube.

There are many affiliate schemes out there so what one is best for you. Well to start with, don’t restrict yourself to just one affiliate program. I suggest signing up to as many as you can. Make sure they are related in some way to what you are blogging about or promoting.

One I use is InLinks. This is part of Text-Link-Ads, the advertising service on my blog. You can also check if your hosting company offers one. My hosting company pays me when visitors from my site sign up.

But why not search for affiliate programs and find the most appropriate for your service or blog. Most affiliate schemes can be placed on your website along with Google Ads.

So decide on what suits your blog best and sign up to as many affiliates as you can.

The next step is to drive more traffic to your site. This is not as hard as you think.

Get your blog listed on as many free directories as you can. Make sure you categorise your listing correctly. Most of these free directories require you to place a link back to them. But that’s ok. By having your site linked to by lots of related websites then you are improving your search rankings.

The final step is search engine optimisation (SEO). How? Well you could use a search engine optimisation company.

Alternatively, you can do some basic stuff SEO yourself. Make sure your page titles are unique and contain appropriate keywords. Place these keywords in the Meta tags and content.

Step four is to continually add new and relevant information. By keeping your blog current then your visitors will keep returning and your traffic will gradually increase. Some of these visitors will also end up clicking on your ads and that will generate additional income for you.
