Putting Website Promotion On Hold Might Save Your Business

21. December 2008

Yes you did just read that!

I just read on the Times Online that the domain Housepricecrash.co.uk was bought back in 2005 when house prises kept on rising and few could see it falling. It may get slated or it may be seen as a good business decision. Either way it has 50,000 hits a day and revenue of £300,000 from advertising.

Business owners should always be looking at the flipside of their main business making money. This is the same for websites. What if people stopped coming to your website? Domain names are cheap. If you see sales falling at your primary website business then a small investment in some domain names to promote a cheaper alternative could see start another revenue stream.

If you sell luxury goods from your website then purchasing another domain and hosting and setting up a site selling cheap brands might be money well spent compared to spending the same money promoting a website service that customers are no longer able to afford.

You might think I am mad for telling you to use your money on another business rather than spending that money on website promotion. A service that makes me money! But if your other business starts generating revenue for you then you will need to promote it. And that's where I come in! Website promotion will still be needed.

So when you need to promote your new revenue stream you know where to come!

Poor Business Email

16. December 2008

It is a difficult time for small businesses just now with customers holding back on spending but you can make sure you have a memorable email address. Too often I see a small business promoting their email address as myname@companyname-freeemailserver-name.co.uk.

Website hosting and an email address do not cost much. Usually only a few pounds. So why not spend those few pounds giving your business a suitable memorable email address.

And if I receive an email from myname@companyname-freeemailserver-name.co.uk then I am likely to think it's spam!

Get a domain name and matching email address. Then people will always be able to find your business, even if your website is just a page with your contact details.

Passing The Prince2 Foundation And Practitioner Exams

16. December 2008

I recently passed the Prince2 Foundation and Practitioner exams. I recommend getting the Passing the Prince2 Examinations book which contains sample exam papers. Very useful to test yourself before the actual exam. The Prince2 Pocketbook is handy for in the office when working on projects or for reference.

And if that's still too complex then the Prince2 For Dummies is a practical guide taking you through the ins and outs of the process and key procedures.

But the most important book is the Managing Successful Projects with Prince2. The Practitioner exam is based on the text in the book and this is the only book allowed during the exam.
